Day 13: Sand Candles Make the Perfect Gift

One of the things Mrs. Claus loves about Christmas time is the warm, cozy glow of candles on the dinner table. The soft light makes the room seem friendly as everyone sits down for Christmas dinner. Shadows dance on the walls as the room is filled with laughter and good cheer.

Before Christmas, Mrs. Claus and the elves spend a day together making special candles. They make all sorts of different candles. Sometimes they cover them in sand, other times they embed objects such as coffee beans into the sides. Mrs. Claus has several molds, so they can make different shaped candles too!

Why don't you make some candles? They make the perfect gift for friends and family, and they're fun to make too!

Paraffin Sand Candles

Here's what you'll need:

Paraffin Wax
Crayons
No-stick spray
Toothpicks
Candlewicks
Muffin tins, or other containers
Sand
Directions

  1. Melt the paraffin wax according to package directions.
  2. Color the paraffin by adding 1/2 a crayon to the melting wax.
  3. Spray the muffin tins thoroughly, then fill with sand and empty out. Sand should be well coated on the sides of the tins.
  4. Pour the wax into the tins, then place a toothpick across the top of each cup with a candlewick tied to the center and hanging into the wax. After the wax hardens, pop the candles out of the tins.

Other Decoration Ideas:

  • Why not use coffee beans at the bottom of the candle instead of sand? Makes a great gift for a coffee lover.
  • You could also embed potpourri in the sides as a fragrant gift.
  • Why not fill the container with chunks of colored wax and fill with clear wax for a mosaic look?
Note: A paraffin and beeswax mix will melt at a higher temperature and be more durable, but paraffin is appropriate for smaller children. You can by the paraffin and beeswax already mixed as candle wax, usually in 5 or 10 pound blocks at a craft store.
