Day 18: Make a String Snowman! |
Wintertime is the perfect time to make decorations for the whole house! The season is even more fun when the decorations are made together instead of store-bought. Why don't you and your family make string snowmen as centerpieces at your holiday table? They're fun and easy, and make great decorations! |

String SnowmenHere's what you'll need:2 inflated round balloons (body and head) 1 cup sugar* 1 cup hot water* Crochet-cotton string 1 (1") red pom-pom (nose) Black felt (eyes) Red felt (mouth and scarf) Green felt (mittens) Top hat Glue *Note: Instead of sugar and hot water as a stiffener, you can use a fabric stiffener available at craft and fabric stores. Directions: Mix the hot water and the sugar together, stirring until the sugar is dissolved. While the sugar mixture cools, blow up the balloons, one slightly larger (the body) than the other one. Wrap the string around the balloons individually until they look like they are covered with lattice work. Pour the sugar mixture into a bowl. Dunk and rotate the balloons into it until they are completely saturated. Carefully hang the balloons over a sink or bathtub until the sugar mixture completely dries. When the string is completely dry (about 24 hours), pop the balloon with a pin and carefully detach the balloon from the string. To construct the snowman, cut away the string around the top of the largest ball so that the smaller ball will fit snugly into the top of the large ball. Glue the balls together. Cut the snowman's features out of the felt and glue then onto the face. Finish the snowman with a red felt scarf, top hat and mittens.
