What Is the Newspapers In Education Progam?

Each day, hundreds of newspapers are delivered to area schools through the Holland Sentinel's Newspapers In Education (NIE) program. The NIE department works with schools and businesses to help area students develop community awareness and literacy.

The Holland Sentinel provides classrooms sets of newspapers free of charge to teachers who use the newspapers through a unique one-to-one partnership with a classroom. This program, called Partners In Education, is available to businesses who would like to get involved in helping local schools.

Teachers use the newspaper to teach everything from reading and writing to science and social studies. Students love to use the newspaper because it can be cut, pasted, drawn on and colored.

The NIE department supports teachers by providing them with numerous resources such as a comprehensive curriculum guide and a monthly newsletter that keeps teachers informed of upcoming special sections and contests.

Teachers receive student activity pages that coincide with educational special sections such as Election Day and Earth Day sections. Teachers also receive information on special SentineLine programs where students are given the opportunity to write and/or listen to educational information lines.

Each year, the NIE department holds numerous educational contests designed specifically for students. Contests include: Football Geography, Design an Ad, The Stock Market Game, as well as many others.
