Photographs, maps, graphs and drawings are an important supplement to news stories. In paying attention to different photographs notice the size and placement of each. Photographs that accompany stories should contribute to the reader's understanding, or possibly supply any additional information they would like to have.

Some photographs and cutlines stand alone and give readers a glimpse of what is going on in other parts of the world. They are called human interest photos.

Drawings appear on the majority of the pages in every newspaper. From cartoons to advertisements, to stories where photographs are inappropriate or unavailable, drawings are a helpful tool in any section.

Graphs are used to clarify data presented in news stories.

Maps are also used in the newspaper to clarify where certain events are happening. They are especially helpful when events take place in remote areas.
