Personality and Responsibility

A newspaper's key responsibility is to publish the highest quality product possible. To do this it must be cognizant of its readers' concerns, while remaining objective and willing to publish diverse ideas.

A measure of a newspaper's fulfillment to its responsibilities can be evidenced by how well it performs in:

  1. Gathering and printing hard, or factual, news.
  2. Providing interpretation and background of hard news in editorials and columns.
  3. Stimulating thought, discussions and decisions with editorials, columns, letters to the editor, etc.
  4. Providing general information and service - weather, stock market, sports schedules and scores, etc.
  5. Providing entertainment - comics, crossword puzzles, feature columnists, etc.
The manner in which a newspaper approaches its responsibilities defines its personality. Each newspaper staff is headed by editors who decide which stories get published. The types of stories that a newspaper tends to favor over others tells what type of personality it has.
