"Person to Person:

Insights to Make Living Worthwhile"

At age 85, Marion (Mert) deVelder has written his first book. And he's already thinking about a second one.

Rev. deVelder is the general secretary emeritus of the Reformed Church in America. Writing his first book at age 85 is not as unusual as it sounds when you learn that the book is a collection of 56 columns from nearly 900 Mert has written over the past 20 years for The Holland Sentinel.

Called "Person to Person," deVelder's book reflects a lifetime of experience, personal observations and insights for living. It's warm, witty, frequently humorous and appeals to all ages.

Noted communicator Robert Johnston says: "In an era of pop psychology and celebrity role-models, Mert deVelder brings us a refreshing change. His straight-forward comments enrich our thinking and lighten our hearts."

A few quotes from the book capture the warmth and wisdom Mert brings to his readers, whether they're church-goers or not:

-- "Do not try to climb a fence leaning toward you or kiss a girl leaning away from you."

-- "Not one of us, whatever our age, ever outgrows our need for someone to say, 'Wonderful!'"

-- "Try a smile. Enjoy the healing process of laughing with others, and most of all, at ourselves."

Prior to holding his executive position in the church, deVelder was a minister in several RCA churches, including 20 years at Holland's Hope Church. He retired to Holland and in 1981, began writing a weekly column for The Sentinel.

The book is available through Holland area bookstores or by mail. Send $9.95 (hardcover $14.95), plus $2 postage/handling to Person to Person, P.O. Box 129, Macatawa, MI 49434.
